Two Kinds of Stock, Two Kinds of Cash Tied Up
A fuel station with a store sells two very different products. Fuel is bought in deliveries that have to be paid for, while store goods are smaller purchases that tie up cash on the shelf. Card processing costs can apply to both. The equipment, pumps, tanks, canopies and coolers, lasts for years but is expensive to replace.
Gas station loans can split along those lines: inventory and cash for the stock, equipment financing for the hardware, and a term loan for a purchase or major upgrade.
Convenience Store Inventory
Convenience store loans for stock work through inventory financing or a line of credit. For store goods, partners may focus on sales reports and supplier statements. Bulk buying can lower unit costs; financing it makes sense only if the stock sells before the payments pile up.
Gas Station Equipment Financing
Pumps, payment terminals, canopies, coolers, ice machines and car washes are typical equipment financing requests. Partners will want quotes and, for used equipment, age and condition. Underground tanks and environmental work raise questions that partners handle case by case.
How to Buy a Gas Station on Cape Cod, MA
Buying an existing station or store combines a business purchase with property or a lease. Kitestone does not arrange real estate purchase mortgages, but a term loan can fund the business, equipment and opening stock where the property is leased or financed separately. Partners will look closely at the seller's fuel volume and store sales records, the lease or property terms, and the condition of the equipment.
Questions Before Buying a Station
- How have fuel gallons and store sales moved over the last three years?
- How old are the tanks, pumps and canopy, and what has been replaced?
- Is there a fuel supply agreement, and does it transfer to a new owner?
- What does the lease or property arrangement require of the operator?
What Partners Review
- Fuel volume and store sales reports, ideally by month
- Supplier and fuel distributor statements
- Bank and card processing statements
- Equipment quotes, ages and condition
- Lease or property documents and existing debt
Card Fees and Cash Timing
Fuel retailers may pay card processing fees on sales, and fuel deliveries have to be paid for. When fuel prices rise, the same number of gallons needs more cash to buy. A line of credit sized to cover one or two fuel deliveries gives room when prices move. Store-side, a growing cold-drink or food-service section can justify equipment financing for coolers, roller grills and coffee equipment.
Keep fuel and store sales separate in your reports; partners read them differently.
